Dear Morongo Basin Community:
The months of February and March bring a number of traditional holidays and celebrations. These include acknowledging Presidents Washington and Lincoln for their service to the country, and recognizing February as “Black History Month.” We also celebrate two days that are steeped in tradition as we celebrate both Valentine’s Day and St. Patrick’s Day with legends of true love and pots of gold.
These two months will be filled with these recognitions and opportunities to learn from these historical events, figures and traditions. Below, I have included some quotes which could be potential teaching moments you can share with your child, family, or co-worker. Those types of rich conversations have a chance to make our small corner of the world better.
Black History Month: “We may encounter many defeats, but we must not be defeated.”
– Maya Angelou
President Lincoln’s Birthday: “Be sure you put your feet in the right place, then stand firm.”
- Abraham Lincoln
George Washington’s Birthday: “It is far better to be alone, than to be in bad company.”
- George Washington
Valentine’s Day: “Love will find a way through paths where wolves fear to prey.”
- Lord Byron
St. Patrick’s Day: “A best friend is like a four-leaf clover – hard to find and lucky to have.”
