The Morongo Unified School District Enrollment Committee held their initial kick-off meeting on Jan. 26. Committee members, district administrators and consultants were in attendance.

Dr. Vargas opened the meeting by outlining the charge of the committee. District counsel Steven McLaughlin provided an overview of the committee’s role and responsibilities, legal requirements under the Brown Act and conflict-of-interest considerations for committee members.

Assistant Superintendent of Business Services David Daniels presented an overview of the district’s financial condition, explaining how enrollment trends have contributed to the committee’s work. Daniels reported district enrollment peaked at approximately 10,000 students. Current 2025–26 enrollment is 7,304, with a five-year projection of 6,821, comparable to enrollment levels in 1986.

The committee elected Jennifer Cusack as chair and Karla Buchanan as vice chair. Both nominations were approved by unanimous vote following motions by Jeff Brady and seconded by Wayne Hamilton.

Committee members engaged in an initial activity and identified additional data needs to support future discussions related to enrollment and potential school consolidation/property disposition.

Public Information Officer Jene Estrada reviewed plans for communication and messaging to inform the community about the committee’s work.

District consultant Dr. Stella Kemp reviewed and confirmed the proposed meeting schedule, with meetings planned through April. The committee is expected to present its recommendations to the Board of Education at a workshop in April or May.

The next meeting is scheduled for Feb. 18 at 6 p.m. For more information visit https://www.morongousd.com/page/enrollment-committee
